This is who I AM.

This is the question that I ask my clients; that I ask them to ask of themselves as we begin our journey together.

How will you know where to begin until you know who you are?

That said, most people will be quick to tell you that ‘Of course, I know who I am’ ~ yet with the task of putting onto paper the qualities and attributes that distinctly define who you are ~ your likes and dislikes, your values, beliefs, strengths, and what you feel are your weaknesses ~ areas of desired or needed improvement ~ you begin to witness your self as you are; to paint a canvas that represents who you are currently – as a starting place for our work together ~ and as a path ~ a journey both within as an experience of knowing your self fully ~ which is unto itself a necessary aspect of deciding where you are headed ~ and as an important exercise in self improvement ~ in attaining goals and making change a reality.

If you know yourself extremely well, you are also likely clear on what you need to improve or change in order to reach the goals that you have set, what you must do to improve the loving aspects of an existing relationship, or how you may live congruent with your highest self ~ your greatest potential ~ far more of the time.

Clients who seek life coaching or therapy for help in acute situations of stress, challenges due to unwanted life changes, or catastrophic events – all see the benefit of this important – life changing work – of knowing one’s self as an immediate and positive solution to feeling lost, uncertain, and for growing self confidence and worth.

I continue to witness clients’ gratitude and happiness when they return with this homework question completed ~ realizing the value of self-observation and self-honesty ~ in identifying (to themselves) the real ways in which they are thinking and feeling about who they are that has defined their life up to this moment; some of which was not in their awareness but now deliberately clear and as a result, something that they can now choose to do more of or to make different.

Knowing who you are is much more than knowing what your favourite foods are, or that you like to sleep in on weekends, snowboard, or play guitar.

Knowing yourself is about knowing the intangible, deeper aspects of your personality, of your goals and ideals, your most personal and intimate thoughts and feelings, and of being willing to admit to yourself what is in need of change so that you can let go of anything that is holding you back from easily being even better ~ happier, and in love with yourself and life.

The question once complete also allows for me to ask the next question: the question that drives our further work together and what you will easily accomplish with my help ~ and with your dedicated persistence and desire for more.

The second question: ‘who am I becoming?’  Let your heart answer this one – and allow yourself to define it with great imagination, hope, and the desire to live fully as your highest self.

namaste!
