March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) has a r March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) has a rich and purposeful history. Emerging from early 20th century social equality movements, its purpose is multifaceted. Celebrating achievements, International Women's Day serves to highlight the contribution of Women throughout history and in modern day. ~ When you trust in your worth and value as a woman and a human being, this inherently guides how you carry yourself in the world ~ and it shapes the way you live. ~ Juno, Queen of the Gods in Roman Mythology was most known for her role as a protector of Women. Juno was said to rule the heavens with a fierce authority (a high level of knowledge and skill) and a resilience that garnered allegiance. She oversaw key aspects of Womanhood ~ birth, marriage, family, domains where Women historically had both power and vulnerability. ~ IWD occurs in March, very close in fact - to the Ancient Roman Festival known as ‘The Matronalia.’ During ‘the Matronalia’ Juno was honoured as Juno ‘Lucina.’ The Matronalia festival celebrated Juno's role as the ‘light-bringer’ and Goddess of childbirth. (Lucina meaning ‘lux’ or ‘light’ as in she ‘brought children into the light.') ~ Historically the Matronalia occurred on March 1st (New Year’s Day in the old Roman Calendar) and was a spotlight upon Women’s strength - a time when Juno’s divine authority was mirrored in the resilience of everyday Women (Matrons.) Matronalia celebrated Women's contributions to society whilst subtly pushing against the rigid norms of an ancient patriarchal world. Matronalia paid homage to Women with gifts and reverence. It was a moment when Rome’s Women, crowned with flowers and unbound hair, offered prayers in her temple - whilst the men and children gifted their ‘Matrons’ in a sweet nod to their worth. ~ In many ways International Women’s day is a direct accession to Matronalia and the enduring importance to uplift Women across all spheres of this world. Juno’s legacy vibrantly echoes on a day like this, wherein we honour and celebrate Women's enduring strength and bold claim to shape the world.🤗🌍 ~ Namaste and love 💗
