Over the last decade several prominent research studies have cited the efficacy, potential, and success of online therapeutic conversation.
In 2020 in the first randomized controlled trial of its kind, a research team investigated the impact of a texting intervention as an add-on to a mental health treatment program versus one without texting. The findings revealed improvement in those who utilized the text messaging-based intervention in addition to receiving therapeutic care. 94% of participants indicated that the texting intervention made them feel better and 87% said they would recommend it to a friend.[1]
Two 2013 studies, one from the University of Zurich published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, and another published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Networking, found that text therapy can be just as effective, if not more effective, than “in person” therapy.[2,3]
Further, with the COVID-19 pandemic, many people’s schedules have been upended, which may prevent individuals with mental health needs from having routine access to a therapist, such as parents who have children at home.
“Texting can help bridge this gap, by providing a means for mental health services to be continuously delivered. A text-messaging psychotherapy is an excellent match for the current environment, as it provides asynchronous contact with a mental health therapist while increasing the amount of contact that an individual can have.” [4]
I liken the use of #lifelines as one element of an integrated holistic treatment modality. While I will always provide you with curated solutions and thoughtful direction based upon the unique needs and circumstances of your situation, in some cases and certainly if you are facing serious life issues, I will recommend that we include another form of therapeutic contact such as a phone or video call.

My work with you changed my life. I will be forever grateful to you. Because of you I was able to do the work to love me and allowed me to give so much love to others. Selfishly I received so much more. I know who I am, and knew how I wanted to lead and this is my legacy. I hope you know how impactful you have been in my life.
Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Sending you lots of love and hugs.
By the time I stepped foot into Dorothy’s office for the first time in March 2012, I had already been through four therapists. It seems that finding the right therapist is like finding the right pair of jeans; you try on many pairs and you know as soon as you’ve found the right ones, they feel so good you never want to take them off. Dorothy turned out to be my perfect fit!
I was one year into a mid-life transformation and there was no turning back. In her gentle way, she guided me on my journey to self discovery and freedom, but not by telling me what to do or giving me the answers. To this day, Dorothy continues to help me dig down deep inside to find the answers I didn’t know were there. Her honest approach forces me to find the truth within myself no matter how ugly it can be.
Because of Dorothy…
I have learned to make time for myself and not feel selfish or guilty for it.
I have learned to do what is best for me regardless of what others think (this is still a work in progress!)
I have learned that the answers to all of my questions are inside of me, sometimes I just need her to point me in the right direction to find them.I have learned to open my heart to love; to give love, to receive love and to live my life as love.
I have learned that there are beautiful people in the world who care so much about others they will do everything they can to help and support them. Dorothy is one of those people and I am forever grateful to have her in my life.
Hi Ms. Dorothy,
The most important thing I learn from you is that as an adult, I have a responsibility and an obligation to manage my own emotion. I am very grateful for your help. You really helped me. Before taking your psychotherapy sessions, I am a very emotional person and this not only makes me and my girlfriend fighting every day, but also causing me to lose many opportunities and friends. I am not good at speaking English and you always smile and be really patient while I was speaking incoherently. I just want to say that I am really really grateful for all you have been doing.
